Tideway Foundation discovery is UNIX based, so if the predominant operating system class is Windows, you must download a Tideway Foundation Windows slave from the appliance and install that to perform Windows specific discovery tasks.
There are three types of slave:
- Credential Slave - a Tideway Foundation application that runs on a Windows host and uses credentials supplied by the Tideway Foundation appliance to perform Windows discovery. Only one Credential Slave is supported per appliance.
- Active Directory Slave - a Tideway Foundation application that runs on a Windows host which is part of an Active Directory Domain. After the slave is installed, you configure it to run as a user. Where that user is configured on hosts in the domain, the slave can log in and run discovery commands. The Active Directory Slave does not use any credentials entered using the Tideway Foundation user interface.
- Workgroup Slave - a Tideway Foundation application that runs on a Windows host which is part of a Workgroup. The user that the slave service runs as is set after the slave is installed. Where that user is configured on hosts in the Workgroup, the slave can log in and run discovery commands. The Workgroup Slave does not use any credentials entered using the Tideway Foundation user interface.
You must install the slave type appropriate to the network you want to discover. That is, if you have an AD domain, install the Active Directory Slave, and if you have a workgroup, install the Workgroup Slave. If you do not have a common authentication mechanism, install the Credential Slave.
To install the slave, you must download the slave installer to the Windows XP or 2003 machine from the Tideway Foundation appliance. If you are not logged in to Tideway Foundation from the Windows machine onto which you want to install the slave, you should log in using a browser on that machine.
Installing a Windows Slave
Windows discovery slaves are downloaded as install files from the appliance and installed onto the local Windows host. They are preconfigured to communicate with the appliance that they are downloaded from.
You must be logged in to the Windows host as an administrator to install slaves. If the software is not installed as this user then after installation you need to grant permissions to write to C:\Program Files\Tideway Foundation\Slave_Type where slave type is one of the following:
- Active Directory
- Workgroup
- Credential
The user that runs the slave must have necessary permissions to read from and write to the etc, log, and record directories.
You should be logged on to the appliance as the system user to download the slave installers.
- From the Administration page, click the Slave Management icon. The Slave Management page is displayed:

- From the Download Slave Installers section of the Slave Management page, click the appropriate link for the type of slave to download:
- Download installer for Active Directory Slave version 7.2
- Download installer for Workgroup Slave version 7.2
- Download installer for Credential Slave version 7.2
- Save the slave installation file to your file system.
- Run the installer by double-clicking on the downloaded installer file.
A welcome screen is displayed.
- Click Next.
The Select Destination Location screen is displayed.
- Enter a new directory to install the slave application to, click the Browse button to navigate to a directory, or click Next> to accept the default location which is C:\Program Files\Tideway Foundation\Slave_Type, where slave type is one of the following:
- Active Directory
- Workgroup
- Credential
- After you have selected a directory and clicked Next>, the Select Start Menu Folder window is displayed.
- Enter a new Start Menu folder to create the Slave application's shortcuts. Click the Browse button to select a different folder, or click Next> to accept the default.
Select the Don't create a Start Menu Folder checkbox if you do not want the slave to appear in the start menu.
- The Select Additional Tasks screen is displayed. This enables you to choose options that will be available in the Start Menu. If you chose Don't create a Start Menu Folder in the previous step, make sure all the check boxes are clear and click Next>. Otherwise, choose one or more of the following options:
- Add View Log File option to Start Menu.
- Add Edit Configuration option to Start Menu.
- Add Uninstall option to Start Menu.
- Click Next> and the Ready to Install window is displayed.
- Review the details displayed and if they are correct, click Install to install the Slave. If the details are incorrect, click the <Back button and navigate through the installer to correct the error.
- A dialog is displayed showing whether the slave has been successfully installed. Click the Finish button to exit this part of the setup.
- The slave is now installed.
Modifying the Slave Host Firewall
The Windows firewall blocks the ports that the slaves use by default. To enable an appliance to communicate with a slave, you must amend the firewall rules to permit communication on one of the following ports for each slave type installed on the host:
- 4321 - Active Directory Slave.
- 4322 - Workgroup Slave.
- 4323 - Credential Slave.
Specifying the Domain Account Used to Run the Slave
The Active Directory and Workgroup slaves gain their permissions from the user account that they run as. To configure this:
- From the Start Menu, select Control Panel. The Control Panel is displayed.
- Double-click Administrative Tools and then Services.
- The Services list is displayed in the right-hand pane.
- Right-click on the slave entry and select Properties from the popup menu. The slave entry is one of:
- Tideway Active Directory Slave
- Tideway Credential Discovery Slave
- Tideway Workgroup Discovery Slave
- Switch to the Log On tab and select This account.
- Enter the username and password of the Domain or Workgroup account that the service is to run as.
You may see a dialog saying that the user has been granted the "Log on as a Service" right.
- Click OK to apply the changes and dismiss the window.
 | Credential Slave User You should not run the Credential Slave as the Local System user, but as a valid user account, which should be in the Administrators group. |
Starting or Stopping the Slave
To do this, from the Control Panel, navigate to Administrative Tools and access the Services list. Select the Tideway Discovery slave that you want to start or stop. The services panel is refreshed with information and links enabling you to start, restart, or stop the slave.
- To start the slave (if it is not running) click the Start the service link.
- To restart the slave (if it is running) click the Restart the service link.
- To stop the slave (if it is running) click the Stop the service link.
Adding Slaves to the Appliance
Adding slaves to the appliance enables the appliance to use them for discovering Windows devices.
Adding an Active Directory Slave
To add a new Active Directory slave, click the Add Active Directory Slave button. The Add Active Directory Slave window is displayed.

Enter the information regarding the new slave in the following fields:
• Name - the name that the slave will be referred to in the user interface; validated to be unique.
• IP Address - the IP address of the slave.
• Port - the port on which to communicate with the slave. The default is 4321.
• Enabled - select the checkbox to enable the slave. Deselected means the slave is disabled.
• Domains - the domain or a space separated list of domains that the slave will discover. This registers the slave to discover particular domains, though does not prevent it discovering other domains that no other AD slave is registered to discover.
Click Apply to add the slave.
The Discovery Slave Management window is redisplayed showing the new slave.
Adding a Workgroup Slave
To add a new Workgroup slave, click the Add Workgroup Slave button. The Add Workgroup Support window is displayed.

Enter the information regarding the new slave in the following fields:
• Name - the name that the slave will be referred to in the user interface; validated to be unique.
• IP Address - the IP address of the slave.
• Port - the port on which to communicate with the slave. The default is 4322.
• Enabled - select the checkbox to enable the slave. Deselected means the slave is disabled.
Click Apply to add the slave.
The Discovery Slave Management window is redisplayed showing the new slave.
Adding a Credential Slave
To add a new Credential slave, click the Add Credential Slave button. The Add Credential Slave window is displayed.

Enter the information regarding the new slave in the following fields:
• IP Address - the IP address of the slave.
• Port - the port on which to communicate with the slave. The default is 4323.
